For Love and Money!
Ok, here we go Creatives! You are valuable and you are loved. And one should never feel ashamed of doing what you love for value – meaning getting paid cash money to do what you enjoy doing. Love and money go together!
I believe that if you can do what you love and get paid to do it, all without hurting or cutting down another human, then go for it! If your actions are legal and mindful of others and are not hurting anyone, then you have every right to move through your creative career path continuing towards reaching goals, as well as, receiving rewards and successes. Now if someone blames you for something that is completely out of your control, or really has nothing to do with you whatsoever, that in no way shape or form is your responsibility – no matter the circumstance – they are trying to make it all about them by blaming you for being successful.
Now we can get on to Love and Money …
My philosophy is that when clients or consumers buy (yes meaning with money) your art, your creative products, and creative services, they are letting you know they love what you are providing and that what you are providing is giving more value to their own life so they, in turn, want it. So they use money as a form of giving in exchange for your craft or creative service.
And that my friend is LOVE! It’s a beautiful thing. In my years of having my own creative business, I realized that the relationship side of my business was the key factor to love and money being interchangeably exchanged. I often joke with my clients years later because they have continued to use my creative services. I tell them, “You didn’t see the fine print on the contract that you had to be my friend when you hired me.” It’s the truth though, and I take great pride in my relationship with my clients. It is one of the main reasons why they return every year or two to use my services.
So even though they love me as a person they also love my craft and creative service so they use money to represent the bond we have as a form of saying, “Thanks Jenn, I love my photos!!”
The struggle was real
One thing I struggled with was putting my ability to afford the price I was asking for my services. See I was asking for way more than I could afford if I was hiring myself. And this love and money philosophy was a way for me to put aside the shame I felt and instead value myself and my clients. It also broke down the walls I was holding up because I felt like an imposter to my clients.
Understanding that love can be expressed in money and money is a form of love, also helped me let go of the shame I had that I didn’t have a “real job” or that for some reason making money from doing something I loved to do so much wasn’t ok! I felt tremendous shame in receiving money for something I loved doing. I could accept a beautiful compliment from someone who loved my work but accepting money felt like I was stealing from the National Bank of Creativity.
So what was the difference?
Why was it easier to accept words of gratitude for my creativity but not money or gratitude for my time, creativity and services?
It seriously frustrated me until I realized that there are people in my life that can’t verbalize how much they love me but I know they do. But they could give me gifts, feed me, and buy me things.
Then it hit me. The same acceptance of money for my services and creativity is just like a good friend or even family member who can’t say the words but can show how much they love you.
Now, yes, we need to require our clients and customers to pay us. But they do it because they have value in the product, craft, or service you are providing. They are saying I love what you do and it makes my life better, so here is my money so I can give both appreciation to you and to my life.
Did you hear that?
They get to not only give appreciation to you by giving you money but they are in turn giving appreciation to their own life because of what you can provide. … Go ahead, read it again. Believe me these are the people you want to attract in your life! They are out there. I promise. And some don’t even have to be talked into trusting you. Yes, there are people out there that immediately will be in love with what you do. Especially if you are authentic and honest with them and yourself, especially yourself Creative!
You see it’s not all about you for them and it’s not all about them for you. One of my favorite Win-Wins in my life is when I get to connect with a client or customer and provide them with something that is fulfilling my purpose and also making their life better! And in this situation, the exchange of money is essential to both the buyer can express love and so the creator can continue to create and provide quality life to others in your community.
I want you to reflect on the times that you had a successful transaction between you and a buyer. What was easy about it, What was hard? And then reflect on a negative interaction with a client or buyer. Where did you excel or falter in delivery? Where was the connection or the disconnect? Try to be honest here. There is something to learn that will help move you to a better place to receive money as love and more of it.
